Sending Files to the Master or System Devices
NOTE: Files cannot be transfered unless they have device mapping information. Complete all device mapping assignments before attempting to send f iles. See the
Device Mapping section on page 76
for details.
- Select Tools > File Transfer to open the File Transfer dialog. By default, this dialog opens the Send tab. The options in this tab are specific to sending files to the Master Controller or System devices on the bus. (FIG. 254).

Add the files to be included in this transfer operation to the Send tab. There are several ways to do this:

- By default, the files listed in the Send tab use the communication settings (transport and target Master) that are associated with the System to which they belong.
To view/edit the communications for files in the Send tab, select a file and select Edit > Communication Settings (in the File Transfer dialog). This opens the Communication Settings dialog, indicating the settings for the selected file. Edit these settings as necessary (refer to the
Communication Settings section on page 118
).
To view/edit the device mapping information for files in the Send tab, select a file in the list and select Edit > Device Mapping
(in the File Transfer dialog).
- With all of the files that are to be included in this transfer listed in the Send tab, click the Send command button (FIG. 255).

- This initiates the transfer of every file listed in the Send tab, in the order in which they are listed (top to bottom).
- The progress and status of each file transfer is indicated in the File Transfer Status tab of the Output Bar.
Adding Workspace Files via the "Select Files for File Transfer" Dialog

- In the File Transfer dialog (Send tab), click the Add command button to open the Select Files For Transfer dialog (FIG. 256).

By default this dialog opens to the Workspace tab. This tab provides a listing of Projects, Systems and System Files that are contained in the currently open Workspace file.
- Files cannot be added to the Files To Send list without device mapping information.
- Source Code files cannot be sent until they have been successfully compiled.
Use the check boxes to select the file(s) to include in this transfer:
- If there is no check box next to a folder, then that folder does not contain any files that are available to transfer.
- If there is no check box next to a file, then that file is not available to transfer (FIG. 257).

- Select the top-level Projects folder to automatically select all available files contained in the Workspace.
- Select a Project or System folder to select all available files contained in the Project or System.
- Click the [+] icons to expand the folders; click [-] to collapse
Click OK to close this dialog and return to the File Transfer dialog.
Adding Individual (Orphan) Files
Use the Individual Files tab of the Select Files For File Transfer dialog to add orphan f iles (files that are not contained in the currently open Workspace) to the Send tab (for inclusion in a file transfer operation):
- With a Workspace open, select Tools > File Transfer to open the File Transfer dialog (Send tab).
- Click the Add command button to open the Select Files For File Transfer dialog.
- Open the Individual Files tab (FIG. 258).

- Select the type of file that you want to add to the Send tab.
- Click the Add button. This invokes the Open dialog, with the Files of Type selection already set to the selected file type.
- Locate and select the file that you want to add, and click OK to close the Open dialog.
- In the Enter Device Mapping Information dialog, enter the proper D:P:S information for the file’s mapping assignment (FIG. 259).

- The Enter Device Mapping Information dialog is automatically invoked for each file that is added to the Send tab. See the
Device Mapping section on page 76
.
- If you add a non-system file, this dialog features Master Directory field for entering a directory on the Master into which the file will load.
- Device Mapping information can be edited later via the Mapping command button (see below).
Click OK to close the Enter Device Mapping Information dialog and return to the Select Files for File Transfer dialog. Note that the selected files are now indicated in the file list at the bottom of the Other tab (FIG. 260).

- Click Add to add other non-Workspace files to the file list (via the Open dialog)
- Click Remove to remove a selected file from the file list.
- Click Mapping to view/edit the selected file’s device mapping information (via the Enter DPS dialog)

Click OK to close the Select Files for File Transfer dialog and return to the File Transfer dialog (Send tab). The files added in the
Select Files for File Transfer dialog are now indicated in the Send tab.
Adding Workspace Files via Quick Load
Use the Quick Load option to automatically load all available files of a specific type, from either the entire Workspace, or from a selected System in the Workspace. Use the options in the Quick Load dialog to specify which file types (of the files included in a selected Workspace file) to add to the Send tab.
NOTE: The Quick Load dialog is not used for receiving f iles.
- To access the Quick Load dialog, click the Quick Load command button in the File Transfer dialog.
- Select a Quick Load Selection Option from the drop-down menu (FIG. 261).

- Active System - Loads only the files from the active System.
- Entire Workspace - Loads all files from the Workspace.
- Select System - Select an individual System from the Workspace to load.
NOTE: If there is not a Workspace open, then this menu is empty.
- Select the file type(s) to include in a Quick Load: The check box options in this dialog allow you to simplify the transfer operation by only sending only specific file types.
Note that there are additional options associated with TP4 and TP5 files. You also have the option of enabling Smart Transfer
for those files (see
Smart Transfer (for TPDesign4 or TPDesign5 f iles) on page 150
).
- Use the Select All and Deselect All command buttons to streamline the selection process.
- Select Remove Duplicates When Loading to prevent having any duplicate entries in the Send tab (default = enabled).
Click OK to close the dialog and load the File Transfer dialog (Send tab) according to the selections made in the Quick Load
dialog.
File Transfer List Files
File Transfer List (*.ftl) files allow you quickly load a set of files, for a transfer operation:
Creating File Transfer List Files
- In the File Transfer dialog, click Save List to open the Save As dialog, with File Transfer List Files (*.FTL) pre-selected in the
Save as type drop-down.
- Enter a File name and select a target location for the file.
- Click OK to create the new File Transfer List File and close the Save As dialog.
Adding Files Using a File Transfer List (*.ftl ) f ile
- In the File Transfer dialog, click Load List to invoke the Open dialog, with File Transfer List Files (*.FTL) pre-selected in the file type drop-down (lower-right corner of the dialog).
- Locate and select an existing .ftl file, and click *Open.
- The files included in the selected *.ftl file are added to the File Transfer dialog.
Smart Transfer (for TPDesign4 or TPDesign5 f iles)
Smart Transfer automatically optimizes the transfer by identifying the various components (fonts, bitmaps, sound files, even pages and popup pages) of the selected TPDesign4 panel file (.tp4) or TPDesign5 panel file (.tp5), and comparing them to the elements already present on the target panel. Any shared components are not sent, resulting in a much faster transfer (assuming that there are shared components).
To enable Smart Transfer for TP4 or TP5 files:
- In the File Transfer dialog, select a TP4 or TP5 file and click the Edit command button to access the Edit sub-menu.
- Select Options to open the TP4 Transfer Options or TP5 Transfer Options dialog, depending n the file type selected (FIG. 262).

NOTE: This dialog works the same for TP4 and TP5 f iles
- Click the I want to enable Smart Transfer option and click OK to close the dialog.
NOTE: Note that Smart Transfer can also be enabled via the Smart Transfer option (under TP4 Files and TP5 Files ) in the Quick Load dialog. See the
Adding Workspace Files via Quick Load section on page 150
for details on using Quick Load.
Transferring Files via the "Bulk Add" Option
Use the Bulk Add option in the File Transfer dialog (Individual Files tab) to send individual files to multiple network devices with different IP addresses:
- In the Select Files For Transfer dialog - Individual Files tab, select the type of file to transfer under Select Type of File to Send.
- Click the Bulk Add command button.
- In the Open dialog, locate and select the file to include in this transfer. Click Open to invoke the Enter Device Mapping Information dialog. Enter the D:P:S Mapping information for this file.
- Click OK to close this dialog and launch the Bulk Add Network Selections dialog (FIG. 263):

Use this dialog to configure multiple different targets for this file transfer:
- Click Add to manually add a new IP/URL Address to the address list, via the New TCP/IP Setting dialog.
- Click Remove to delete the selected address(es) from the address list.
- Click Remove All to clear the address list.
- Click Listen for Masters to listen for NetLinx masters on the network, via the Listen For Masters dialog. Select one or more Masters in this dialog to be added to the address list in the Bulk Add Network Selections dialog. See the Listening for Masterson the Network section on page 121 for details.
Click Import IP Address File to add addresses contained in an IP Address List (CSV or TXT) File, via the Import IP Address File dialog. IP Address List Files are generated via the Export IP Address List File option in the Communications Settings dialog - Network tab. See the
IP Address List Files section on page 124
for details.
Once a list of files has been has been loaded, select one or more files in the list to include in the Bulk transfer. Note that the number of files selected for transfer is indicated at the upper right of the Bulk Add Network Selections dialog.
- Click OK to close this dialog and return to the Select File For File Transfer dialog - Individual Files tab. The file list in this tab will indicate the file added with each address selected from the Bulk Add Network Selections dialog (FIG. 264):
